Prayers on Lent 1

Prayers Sunday 14 February, 2016
We thank you Father for those days in the desert when through prayer and fasting, Jesus discovered your will for his life and overcame temptation. Listen to the voice of your church, calling to you from the desert of this world. Protect us with your strong hand and outstretched arm, that nourished by your word and fortified by your Spirit we may proclaim the good news of your love to all people in word and deed, even as Jesus showed us.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Heavenly Father,
We pray for church leaders, family members and friends whose influence has led us to worship here this morning. We thank you for all those who minister to us at St Marks and this morning give special thanks for Charlie who has served us faithfully for the last 25 years and inspired and encouraged us on our Christian journey. We give thanks for the fellowship which we find in this church which supports us as we seek to put our faith into practice in our daily lives. Strengthen us, Lord, in your service, so that we, in our turn, may be an encouragement to others.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for those who seek to make peace in this divided world; for all national leaders that they may have wisdom to know and courage to do what is right; for all men and women that their hearts may be turned to you in the search for righteousness and truth; for those who are working to improve international relationships, that they may find the true way of reconciliation; for those who suffer as a result of war; the mentally distressed, the refugees, the homeless and hungry.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Loving Father; we pray for our hospitals and nursing homes. For the work and devotion of carers whose skill and compassion bring both material and spiritual comfort at times of need. We ask for your loving compassion on all whose lives have been marred by tragedy of any kind. We pray for all who are downcast or fearful. We remember those who await a doctor’s diagnosis or an operation. We pray for all who seek healing and hope and we bring before you those most in need in our own community, the elderly, the housebound and those in care. We remember in our prayers today Joan Eatwell who is recovering after a spell in hospital.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Jesus Christ is the light of the World, a light which no darkness can quench.  We remember before God those who have died and light a candle to symbolise the light of Christ which eternally shines and brings hope.  We remember today....
You turn our darkness into light in your light shall we see light.
We give thanks for all who have passed beyond death and been transformed in your glorious kingdom: for the saints, for loved ones departed; that we, like them may come to the fullness of your presence.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

God who shines in the darkness, receive these prayers and the prayers of our hearts, in the name of the one who is your light, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
We join together in saying the words of The Lord’s Prayer
