Saints and Pilgrims

Saints and Pilgrims by Bishop AlanSaints and Pilgrims

A devotional book for 2014

For the centenary year of the St Albans Diocese, Bishop Alan has produced an excellent book which takes you through the year one day at a time reflecting on the lives of men and women who have shaped the history of the Church. It is a big beautiful book which costs £25 and it would make an excellent present for Christmas. I have started reading the book and it is ideal for those who are just at the very start of the Christian faith as well as crusty old pilgrims who have been on the journey for many years. My advice is to buy one and you will not be disappointed.

Saints & Pilgrims draws on hundreds of years of dedicated service to the Gospel in the St Albans Diocese area for its rich collection of stories. Beginning with St Alban himself, Bishop Alan explores the lives of 366 Christian men and women from all across the area, and from hugely diverse backgrounds.

Amongst the Saints and Pilgrims included are Gaye Perry, Trevor Huddleston, John Donne, Margaret of Antioch, Bridget Adams, and of course John Bunyan. A number of the pages are illustrated with rare and unusual images. Each entry has been meticulously researched and features a short biography, a poem or extract of writing from the individual, and a prayer written by  Bishop Alan.

All profits will be used Christian charitable work.

Bishop Alan said

'It is my hope and prayer that Saints & Pilgrims will be widely used in St Albans Diocese and indeed beyond. The inspiring witness of women and men through the centuries is a rich and vital legacy for Christians today, and it is an encouragement but perhaps not a surprise to have found such dedicated servants of God in so many places in this region.

It has been a tremendous privilege to research and write Saints & Pilgrims. I have discovered little known stories of faithful endeavour against overwhelming odds, tales of quiet and faithful persistence, underpinned by prayer, and along the way I have of course revisited the names of those known so well to us such as  St Alban, Francis Bacon and Christina of Markyate.

I pray that you will gain insight and understanding from this book. Above all, I pray that it will enable you to draw closer to Him from whom we derive all that we are and do.'
