4. Writing a letter of application for funding

Perhaps the most important thing which you have to do is to put pen to paper and write a letter of application or complete an application form. You will notice that many grant making bodies now have forms available to download from the internet. Many charities, such as the Bedford Charity - The Harpur Trust,  have an initial application process to determine suitability. This is extremely helpful as it gives you an indication of whether you might get a grant before you put in lots of time.

If there is no form to complete you will have to write your own letter. It must include all of the important points and it must not be long, never more than two side of A4.

Remember to make sure your letter does the following

  • Describes who you are

  • Establishes the need for your project and who the beneficiaries will be

  • Shows how you have consulted with the community and agencies

  • Describes the project

  • Demonstrates exactly what the outcomes of the project will be (how many people will benefit etc.

  • Shows how you will monitor and report results

  • Make it clear how much money you have raised yourself, how much you need and how you will meet a shortfall

  • Tell them when you want to start

 

You will see below a copy of a grant application made for landfill funding. This will give you a really good start when considering how to complete a form like this. Note that you must not be afraid to blow your own trumpet! These application forms are easier to complete because they ask specific questions and provide a space in which to include your answer.

I have also included copies of successful applications which I have made for landfill grants from Biffa. This was a two stage process, the first application was made in round 1, and then when successful this was followed by a fuller application. You may find it helpful since the applications include all of the things which are important which funders want to know.
